Corel Centre

The Corel Centre, located in Kanata, Ontario and home to the Ottawa Senators of the NHL is a "state-of-the-art" sports and entertainment facility. Completed in the fall of 1994, the Senators played their first game here in January of 1995. Modern Niagara teamed with PCL, the general contractor, and J. L. Richards, the mechanical consulting engineers to deliver this design-build project that was completed on time and on budget, to rave reviews from the owner, the public, and the press.

The Corel Centre seats 18,500 for hockey with 110 private suites, an Olympic sized ice surface, restaurants, food courts, meeting rooms, team offices, dressing rooms and training and fitness facilities.

Modern Niagara's "scope-of-work" for this project included:

  • Plumbing
  • Hydronic heating
  • Ventilation & air-conditioning
  • Fire protection and smoke evacuation
  • Building automation systems

The design-build concept worked extremely well for this project delivering the following advantages:

  • Fixed price at concept stage to enable the owner to arrange complex financing.
  • Mechanical contractor involved very early to control costs, provide comparative cost analysis, and provide practical design input.
  • Limited change orders.
  • On-time project delivery.
  • Team approach.
